Installing on Mac OS X Leopard

  1. The DVTool application will only run on Leopard or later due to the version of Java provided by Apple.  Install FTDI drivers from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm prior to connecting the DVDongle.  Once installed, plug in the DV Dongle and download the DVTool tarball at http://www.dvdongle.com/downloads/DVTool-dist.tgz and extract to your Desktop.  You can then proceed to the Using the DV Dongle page listed at the top of this page.  Note that special drivers from FTDI are required for multi CPU Mac’s.

Installing on Linux

  1. Drivers for the FTDI USB chip used by the DV Dongle are included in most Linux distributions.  Install the Sun Java Runtime (JRE) 6 from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and make sure that this version is selected in your PATH environment variable.  Once installed, plug in the DV Dongle and download the DVTool tarball at http://www.dvdongle.com/downloads/DVTool-dist.tgz and extract to your Desktop.  Run dvtool.sh to start the DVTool application.  Note that some distributions like Ubuntu include an accessibility package called brltty that must be uninstalled before DV Dongle use.
